After a long weekend of working with extremely talented speakers and presenters of all ages in a course called “Vocal Mastery; Voice, the Third Hand” here in Germany, I’ve come away with some new insights and some newly formed old ones. In German, vocal pedagogues have long said; “Stimmbildung ist Menschenbildung!” (loosely translated; „Voice Training is Human-ness Training!“). This entire weekend made this manifestly apparent. Simply isolating and exercising single functional parameters of the voice mechanism mirror processes on many other levels. Often it’s not even necessary to reference these processes. Just as often, I’ve found, referencing them and making them just a bit more conscious, makes them more powerful.

As I’ve blogged in differing contexts before, it’s possible to separate psyche and soma, or psyche and “The Voice” and then polarize about questions like nature vs. nurture or “Mechanics” vs. “Energy” or similar interesting juxtapositions. Whichever is your present favorite polarity, one thing seems clear: they work in both directions. In other words; you can work on the voice through the psyche. You can work on the psyche through the voice. It’s possible to do this implicitly. It’s possible to do this explicitly. Work with the voice *IS* work with the emotional body, the archetypes, the entire cranio-sacral system and important parts of family systems dynamics.

With singers and especially with presenters and trainers there are often hidden prohibitions from the family dynamic about being emotionally expressive, which, of course, manifest themselves as breath conflicts. This mirrors, as you can imagine, a less than flexible aretenoideus musculature, a ‘cemented’ psoas-iliopsoas-iliacus core musculature and a sacral bone-lumbar spine positioning which limits the expressiveness of the singing and speaking voice. Of course physical exercises will help here. However, if you’re not willing or not able to address a more holistic side of the connection, you’re just inviting some new tension chain to imprint itself.

If you’ve got the training, the radar or the instinct, it’s possible, disguised as an ‘acting exercise’ or explicitly as a constellation, to give back secondary feelings to the family members from which they were taken. Although this can get very emotional, it doesn’t take long and invariably feels like you’ve just gotten out of the shower and into mountain sunshine! The spine is more supple, the breathing is more ecstatic and the voice has a repeatable strengthening of the first and second formants. All this and more can then be ‘anchored’ into the system through an intensification of the ‘felt sense’. They then become positive habits.

The Neuro-Linguistic aspects of this and similar processes are indeed important, but the effects go far deeper than the Broca- or Wernicke centers themselves. The semantic reactions brought about by effective wordings transform the nature of metabolism itself. That, in turn, lowers and makes more flexible both the diaphragm and the larynx which allow our voices to express primary emotions in authentic ways. Because of the acoustic areas of our mirror neurons, when we hear such voices, either singing or speaking, it transforms our metabolism and inner state as well. Facial expressions, gestures and the voice all become more congruent and authentically expressive.
