Time, Time, Time and Roses

I went to buy some bare root roses this morning. Some of my favorites– filled, fragrant, spectacular. It’s always strangely thrilling for me to hold those scrawny, brown, bare roots in my hand and to imagine the shape, the color and the fragrance of the summer’s roses. On the way to Germany’s oldest rose nursery, as if to emphasize the strangeness, it snowed for the first time. Something about the trip there was like a time-warp; colorful, fragrant, rose images in my head and cold, driving snow in the landscape.

Thing is, I know it happens the other way around in the spring. The sun is shining. The rosebuds are swelling. The garden is taking form and I’m imagining snowy autumn and planting the garden for the next year. I used to feel kind of bad about this—-not being ‘in the moment’ and all. Today there was something about it which felt light and right. I wouldn’t bet on it, but it’s easy to imagine that we’re the only species who can play with time like this. Sure, squirrels gather nuts for the winter, but do they have that specially felt combination of joy, nostalgia, anticipation and patience known to us? Hard to prove, one way or the other, but it certainly seems like part of the specialness of being human is just this mental-emotional codification of time. I know for sure that it does something profound in me— ESPECIALLY linked to the rhythms and cycles of nature.

Einstein said that time is illusion. But it’s a VERY convincing one. A most convincing time-keeper is the illusion of summer’s Old Roses.
